Today I was reading an article in Asianage named “The True Heroes in Covid-19 battle”! After reading this article, I honestly feel, we appear selfish if we don’t spend a minute saluting these heroes and thank these little creatures in our hearts!

The whole world is gearing up for Vaccination and fight against Covid Virus. However, remember, these vaccines were tested and administered first on mice, rats, rabbits, monkeys, and Syrian hamsters. These animals were given the first Jab of the vaccine. These animals develop immunity closer to human bodies. After all the tests and studies, they would go to sleep forever! They make ultimate sacrifice to save human lives! It is a difficult task for the scientists to put them back to regular health after these tests. Most of the time, they are put to sleep in the most humane way possible! Let us all salute these lifesavers in developing Covaxin or Covishield or any other Vaccine in the world!

While reading this article, it reminds me of the story of Barbarika, the son of Ghatotkach and the grandson of Bheema. He is one of the lesser-known warriors of Mahabharat! He learned the art of warfare from his mother, Maurvi. He received 3 powerful arrows upon Tapasya. However, he has to use these weapons to fight for the weaker side in a battle. When Lord Krishna asked how many days it would take them to finish the war. Bhishma said 20 days, Dronacharya 25 days, Karna 24 days, Arjuna 28 days, etc. However, Barbarika said 1 minute!! Lord Krishna astonished! Lord Krishna asked Barabarika, which side you are going to fight for. Barbarika expressed his desire to fight for the Pandavas as they were the weaker side. (as promised to his guru).

Here is the twist! Lord Krishna revealed the paradox of Barbarik’s impossible promise: The power of the 3 arrows makes him the most powerful warrior on the battlefield, whichever side he joins, it would make the other side weaker. Eventually, he would switch sides continuously, destroys everyone! Lord Krishna gives a benediction to witness even after his head was severed from his body, his head would be in a conscious state. It would be placed on a hill overlooking the battlefield so that he could witness the whole war.

Barbarika, being a true warrior and disciple of Lord Krishna, readily agreed and severed his own head and witnesses the whole battle!!

End of the battlefield, Pandavas asked Lord Krishna, who won the battle? Lord Krishna suggested that Barbarika should be allowed to make that decision as he was a neutral witness to the whole war. To this, Barbarika concluded that it was Lord Krishna alone who was responsible for the Pandava’s victory: his advice, presence of mind, and game-plan were the most crucial!! One of my friends runs a startup. Recently he was asking the Candidate’s GitHub profile rather than a traditional resume to shortlist for an interview! Recruitment models are changing. Today when I am reading an article in Hindu Business Line, I could corroborate both. GitHub is planning to increase the developers base on its platform from the current 5.8 million to 10 million in India by 2023.

Yes, GitHub is changing Software Developer’s Giving Back Attitude, it is altering Individual’s Software Intellectual Quotient, it is elevating Team Cohesion & Communication, and It is bringing alternative Recruitments Models!

India is the third-largest market for developers on Github. India is the fastest-growing country in the world wrt to GitHub!! Indian developer’s attitude towards contributions is changing dramatically!! This is a positive sign. In the last 1 year, the number of contributions on the platform (issues and team discussions) increased by 75 % in India compared to 40 % for the rest of the world.

Open source contribution is picking fast in India. The problems solved by Indians and available open-source code are quite useful contributions for the rest of the other emerging economies! GitHub is launching the “GitHub Externships” Program, which provides an opportunity to the students in 100+ education institutions. It helps to build relevant skills as future developers in these enterprises through working on projects listed by these enterprises on open source.

What is this Externship? To date, we only heard about Internships. However, the Industry started offering Externships! What is the difference? An externship is typically an unpaid shadowing of a respected industry professional during which the extern will observe daily duties. An internship is a paid or voluntary position with an organization for someone who is learning a profession, typically spanning over a few months (eller.arizona.edu). An internship brings a hands-on experience through the completion of tasks and responsibilities, whereas an externship is focused on giving a student a deeper understanding of a specific industry.

How One Ship Can Impact World Trade? Mind-Blowing!! In My Childhood, I got Full Marks in My Social Essay about Suez Canal! After 34 Years, Today I Realized How Important It Is? Read this Interesting Perspective!!

I still remember I was simply bihearting the geography of the Suez Canal in my school. We read it as an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea (Europe side) to the Red Sea (Asia side), dividing Africa and Asia. It was 193.3 Km, Maximum boat beam (254 ft 3 in). Just to put you in perspective, if I have to take the sea route from London to Mumbai, if there is no Suez Canal, I need to go around Africa (passing around the Cape of Good Hope) to reach Mumbai (19,800Km). Thanks to Suez Canal in Egypt, it shortened the distance to 11,600Km!

Today, the Canal is a vital link in world trade, and contributes significantly to the Egyptian economy; In 2009 the income generated from the canal accounted for 3.7% of Egypt's GDP. $5.61 billion in revenues from it in last year. Now you can imagine how important it is!

Now you must be wondering why I am talking about Suez Canal! You might have heard this news!” Oil prices have surged more than five percent overnight after a container ship ran aground in the Suez Canal – one of the world's busiest shipping routes.” The container ship named “Ever Given” is blocking the narrow strait. As per the University of Plymouth research, almost 90 % of the world's trade is transported by sea. This canal accounts for almost 13 percent of world trade. It allowed 19,000 ships in 2019, which is nearly 1.25 billion tonnes of cargo!! According to a Reuters report, “any such delay could also lead to a shortage of container vessels and boxes, as 30% of all container ships in the world pass through Suez. As per SCA data, in 2020, nearly 19,000 ships, or an average of 51.5 ships per day, with a net tonnage of 1.17 billion tonnes passed through the canal” ( indianexpress.com). According to Bloomberg, 6 lakh barrels of crude oil flow from the Middle East to Europe and the United States via the Suez Canal every single day. A big trade!!

If a ship is blocked, to reroute, it adds another 15 days’ voyage!! It happened due to a gale-force sandstorm, which blotted out light and limited the captain's ability to see!!

Prakash worked as a journalist for 12 years. Started private detective agency called “Seventh Sense Group” in Surat, in 2010. Unable to answer nature’s call while on assignments as a detective, Prakash realized that he had to come up with a solution to avoid health complications.

Sushma lived with her father who was unwell and needed her help when going to the bathroom every time. Because of this, she also started developing a backache having to manage his father's weight.

Prakash and Sushma did a lot of research before coming up with the product. I feel it is perfectly fit as Design Thinking Case Study which you are all studying in your Engineering!!

See the steps they followed before making the final product.

·        At first, they experimented with the material, then they added a gusset (a gusset is a triangular or rhomboidal piece of fabric inserted into a seam to add breadth or reduce stress from tight-fitting clothing) which made the bag more compact. Later a funnel (similar to the plastic funnel which we use to fill the oil bottle) was added with the gusset.

·        After they had devised the design, they had to ensure that there was no way that the urine would leak out of the bag.

·        Finally, they found the perfect combination of chemicals that could convert urine into gel instantly.

Look at these shocking facts published by www.who.int: Approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes. Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product. 93% of the world's fatalities on the roads occur in low- and middle-income countries, even though these countries have approximately 60% of the world's vehicles.

Speed Thrills but It Kills? How Average Speed Matters? Every 1% increase in Mean Speed produces a 4% increase in the fatal crash risk. The death risk for pedestrians hit by car fronts rises rapidly (4.5 times from 50 km/h to 65 km/h). In car-to-car side impacts, the fatality risk for car occupants is 85% at 65 km/h.

Will you agree now why Ireland is Introducing this New ‘Average Speed’ Technique? They introduced a technology to measure its average travel time between two spots. By capturing the time each car passes the two locations, it can average out the speed the driver was traveling at to cover the stretch. We incubated a start-up named Keshmin Labs (Pradeep Varma, Gyansai K and Rohit K (2016-2020 ECE)) (ksheminlabs.com). They developed a device that can monitor the driving pattern and vehicle condition to give live alerts based on the behavior. It can automatically detect a crash and alert predefined members with the location and impact of the crash. It also provides real-time updates about the speed limits. It detects Drowsiness and Damage or theft alert when parked. The final goal is to connect the car to the cloud to make it a smart car. We are ready with a complete solution!

Appeal to Govt: Keeping the importance of this technology, it is a good idea to make all automakers embed a chip/sensor to measure time and distance (average speed) and constantly connect to Govt. RTO Cloud Database. As soon as the driver starts the steering, the IoT sensor connects to Cloud Server, meters the distance. As soon as the driver stops, the IoT sensor reports it back to Cloud again and calculates the average speed!

Traceable Plate!! Food Traceability! My Failed Idea or Story: Having Idea Vs. Not Having Risk Appetite or Execution Ability! How Emurgo, a Singapore-based blockchain Tech Company deployed a similar Food Traceability solution! Read this Interesting Idea & Perspective!!

Today I was reading an article in Japan Times-“Your dinner has an origin story and blockchain tech can help you find it”. 13 years back I was working on this idea, developed a lot of use cases, but never launched! Read the price I paid for this!

It was 26-11-2008 (13 years back), I sent a proposal to Azim Premji’s Office with the title: Global Partner Agri Platform (GPAP) - A Virtual Green Hub by Wipro. The goal is to establish Food Traceability and Agri platform facilitating farmers. Premji’s office forwarded this proposal to CTO Office. It was well-reviewed by the then CTO. I got detailed feedback, what works and what does not.

Subsequently, I moved out of Wipro and Joined Educational Institution(GVPCE). I along with few students started a start-up named “TraceablePlate” with the tagline “Track Your Food”. It was on 02-10-2011. Our goal was to develop software that can vet GAP (Good Agriculture Practices) practices & trace the farm output. When a consumer buys an apple, he/she scans QR code on the Apple, they should able to find the location of an apple where it grew, the Story of the farmer, at what conditions it was grown, which vehicle was used to transport, a number of days it was in the travel and all about the Apple history.

We submitted a proposal to a start-up challenge as well. Let me quote the Student names. They should see how we all missed a great opportunity as a team: G.N.V.Suresh, L.D.Prerana, M.Kameswari, M.Anusha, V.Sai Kiran, Swathi and Shilpa (2011-2015 Btech Students). After 1 year, students got placed in various companies. Start-up was closed.

Later, the same proposal was discussed with Mr. Nithin Gudisa, IIT Madras Alumni (2013-17 BTech Mechanical), and encouraged Nitin to start a start-up on TracablePlate. Later Nitin joined his family business as Director, Operations (SVN ShivaJyothi Group: Real Estate, Hospitality, Education, Photography).

Later again I wrote a letter on Fri, Nov 3, 2017, 2:25 PM to the ITC leadership team: S Sivakumar: Agri & IT Businesses, regarding Tractability. How ITC can invest in this tractability solution? The gist of the proposal is as follows

Food Traceability Story becomes the core USP of the product. The customer would be happy to see the following value additions when he is buying a product

1. While I am opening the packet, I love to see where these vegetables are from? Place, Process, and People involved in this.

2. I am interested to see if there are any certifications- may be soil or pesticide or organic or ISO etc

3. I am interested to see how many miles this product traveled before I grabbed it. The lesser has less embedded water - virtual water. I am happy to consume less water and save mother earth

4. I am interested to see the farmer's name, his/her story, and life while opening the packet. The story of the farmer revives glories of agriculture again!

5. I am interested to verify all these online. Hence if there is any verify app with cloud agri traceability data, it would be amazing! Real farmer gets benefits. GI tagged products get premium value! Counterfeit can be minimized in agribusiness.

Finally, Today, on 07/03/2021, I see this wonderful article on how a blockchain technology company Emurgo is implementing traceability solutions for 500 coffee farmers in Indonesia!!

My Realization: Having great ideas is no use!! Having a risk appetite is more important. I really admire Emurgo, Founder, Ken Kodama (Singapore-based company) whose company deployed this food traceability solution using Blockchain technology. Congratulations Ken!!

Please don’t do the same mistake as I did!! Having great Ideas is needed. Implementing Ideas is also equally important. Time is critical. 13 years the old idea is still a valid business case!! We lost the game!!

Author quoted an interesting marketing byte in the context of Burger King and McDonald's: “Getting a whopper is always the best, but ordering a Big Mac is also not such a bad thing”: How Burger King humanely connected to its Rival brand McDonalds! It all shows how they employed a healthy marketing style to beat the competition? In 2021, Marketing should be more Humane, More Personalized, More Connected, More Meaningful, Value Driven, Community Driven, and Authentic!

Pandemic has changed the business landscape upside down. Every business house is struggling to raise! In this hour of crisis, marketing is the key and savior. To date, Agile and DevOps methodologies are confined to Software Development Lifecycle. However, today Agile methodology extended its wings to Marketing as well. Today there is a viral video of Sachin Tendulkar with a young boy, Mohammed Aiman Koli from Mumbai who solved a Rubik's cube without looking at it. This video garnered over 2 million views on Instagram in less than a day, and another 1.6 million views on Facebook. Now I have a bigger question for you! Is there any relationship between solving a Rubik's cube and one's intelligence? I did a little google research. I found a few interesting aspects!

Rubic’s Cube solving needs Pattern Recognition, 3D Movement Visualization (Spatial Intelligence), Photographic Memory. They are inborn skills. They cannot be trained easily. They are God’s gifts! On top of this, one needs practice.

Beyond this, Mohammed Aiman Koli has more skills as he is performing speedcubing. Speed Cubing needs finger agility, multitasking, and muscle memory! They need to be trained and acquired through practice.

There is no specific evidence to relate intelligence and solving Rubick’s cube. However, one thing is clear, the process of trying to understand the advanced algorithms in speedcubing helps to comprehend group theory and 3D visualization. This is one sport. One needs practice and commitment.

Rubick’s cube was invented in 1974! More than 350 million Rubik cubes are sold (2009, I am it must be 2 or 3 times by 2021)! As per World Cube Association, the USA has 27401 people who solved it, China has 2240 and in third position India with 12664! Further, Russia 6357, Brazil 5458, Canada 4707, Philippines 3485, Poland     3378, Australia 3358, and Indonesia 2972 (www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/statistics.php#most_countries).

It is an interesting story of Rubick’s Cube inventor. He is a professor! How his classroom teaching tool became a world-famous sport!! Read this story.

Rubick’s cube invented by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Ernő Rubik worked at the Department of Interior Design at the Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts in Budapest. The cube was built as a teaching tool to help his students understand 3D objects and solving the structural problem of moving the parts independently without the entire mechanism falling apart. He got a patent in 1976!!

Dear Students

Regardless of intelligence connection, if you are already practicing Rubic’s Cube, continue to do that. It is one sport! It increases your cognitive abilities. It enhances your ability to work under pressure, it helps in problem-solving abilities. Dealing with things with patience is a sign of emotional intelligence!!

There is another interesting mathematical question! Rubik's Cube has eight corners and twelve edges right. How many ways to arrange? I am not good at mathematics. Somewhere I read this as “43 quintillion.
